The Grange
We have now exchanged contracts with the owners of the Grange, and we expect to complete the sale within the next 12 months. Now that the property purchase has successfully gone through the legal phase we are proceeding with the planning process at full speed and hope to show people around soon and share our plans. However, as The Grange remains in the ownership of the vendors and as such is still private property, we would therefore ask people not to visit the property without prior arrangement.
Our story
Thornhill House has cared for local people in Great Longstone for over 30 years. Founded by Molly Thornhill and funded by local philanthropy, it was one of the country's first dual registered nursing and residential homes. Today we're preparing to relocate to The Grange, extending Molly's proven model of person-centred care for future generations.
Why us?
Our charitable mission is entirely focused on the health and well-being of older people in Great Longstone and the surrounding villages. We encourage residents to make the space their own and feel part of the Thornhill family. A dedicated volunteer team supports everything we do, from companionship to meals on wheels, 365 days a year.
Why now?
The care sector faces funding pressures, regulatory demands and a chronic shortage of trained staff. Locally, over 30% of our catchment population is aged 65 or over, and we constantly manage a waiting list. After 30 years, Thornhill House has reached its physical and operational limits, prompting trustees to purchase The Grange.
Thornhill House at The Grange
Opening in 2028, our new home will increase capacity from 19 to 26 beds, most with ensuite facilities. Plans include a specialist dementia wing, expanded end of life care, 'extra care' accommodation, a staff well-being room and a community space - alongside investment in fundraising and research to keep the charity resilient.
